The Mental Aspect of Combating Obesity

World Wide WebThe Mental Aspect of Combating Obesity | I just saw a segment on the KTLA 5 news the other day that explained that not only is obesity on a drastic rise, but according to studies, in twenty years time 1 out of every 2 adults will be obese. Can you believe that? Fifty percent of all U.S. adults will be 30 pounds or more overweight if the pattern continues on its current trend.

That's a very disheartening fact and one of the main reasons why I started this website because I myself am in the process of combating obesity. Since I am changing my lifestyle and habits to become much more health conscious, hopefully I can inspire others to do the same.

The trouble with obesity is that in order to put up a strong fight against it, the choices and decisions a person makes determines everything. Choices such as:

"Should I eat a chicken salad with a light dressing or go get a double bacon cheeseburger, fries and a soda for dinner?"

"Pack a healthy lunch for work next day or just grab some greasy fast food?"

"Should I go running tonight, or sit on the couch with a bag of potato chips and watch a movie?"

"While at the market, should I purchase some apples, oranges, and bananas, or just load up my shopping cart with soda, chips, and cookies?"

These are just a small samples of choices we're faced with on a regular basis, and it's the decisions that we make that are going to either lead us in a more positive, healthy direction, or further down the obesity road. Therefore dealing with the issue of being overweight or obese, the most important aspect to determine is your mental standpoint. Making the firm mental commitment to yourself to make an actual change in what you eat, how much you eat, and the amount of physical activity you do. Only when these aspects are truly taken into account and rightfully governed will changes actually take place.

However all too often people get complacent and simply lack the motivation and willpower to make a long lasting change in their lifestyle that is going to have an actual impact. Like the fast food drive-through that gets food in your hands within minutes, many people have the idea that obesity or being overweight can also be handled in a few minutes.

Unfortunately that's not the case.

Only someone who makes the definitive mental commitment to oneself will be willing to give up the bad habits that they've developed over the years. The greasy fast food, the extra large super big gulp sodas, the oversized bag of potato chips, the gallons of ice cream, the buckets of fried chicken, the chili cheese smothered french fries, all of which play a role in becoming more than thirty pounds overweight.

When you look at combating obesity from a different perspective, you will find that to make a significant impact, a number of changes will need to be made and a number of habits will need to be altered. In order to effectively make a change the answer cannot be simply to do just one "thing" since it's not just one "thing" that causes an individual to become severely overweight.

It all comes down to the choices and decisions you make each and every hour of the day. All those small decisions contribute to the larger picture... YOU! From the moment you wake up and decide what to have for breakfast, to the drinks and snacks at break, the lunch you opt for at work, the choice you make for dinner, the exercise you choose to do and its frequency. All these choices and decisions will have an impact on your health and towards your commitment to lose weight.

Keep in mind like any new undertaking, the first month will be the most difficult to overcome. Your body will need to get used to the increased level of physical activity, your mind will struggle with cravings for the unhealthy foods that you have be eating for awhile now, and habits that you have become used to will need to be broken.

However, when each and every decision related to food and exercise are taken into careful consideration, and unhealthy choices are avoided at all cost, then you will find yourself walking proudly away from obesity and into a more well balanced, healthy life.
