World Wide Web | Alcohol and the health service | Wine and beer, when enjoyed moderately, are one of life's little enjoyments. But overconsumption quickly turns joy into misery. You don't need me to tell you the physical and mental problems that alcohol addiction can cause, since they are well publicised.
"Alcohol is now the second biggest risk factor for cancer after smoking and is the biggest cause of liver disease, which is the fifth most common cause of death in England" says today's Guardian.
The writing's on the wall for heavy booze consumption, and the government will need to do all they can to educate people and to make sure everyone has the chance of a healthy life. Prohibition, of course, historically never worked but I'd not be surprised if heavy drinking goes the way of smoking in the UK, and that one day in the not too distant future public drunkenness, rather than being something we put up with in urban centres like it was inclement weather, will become socially inacceptable. Services like the police and the NHS will feel the benefits when it does.
